The ceremonial building in Lviv
The ceremonial building in the cemetery is a building with a very heavy functional load: on the one hand, it is a farewell to loved ones, and on the other hand, it is a psychological support for visitors in difficult times. Also, the image of the building must match the purpose.
The main idea of the project is to design a modern building that will have the image of a ceremonial building, but without the signs of any religious denomination. The building is designed on one floor 5 meters high, and above the main hall has a sloping dome – a truncated cone, which has an upper window. This dominant part is a modern interpretation of the classical dome of ceremonial buildings of different denominations and historical times (for example, the element “oculus” from the traditions of construction in ancient times of sacred buildings – which symbolized the connection with the sky). A gallery with columns is designed on the main and side facades. The side gallery leads to a green square with a gazebo, where visitors can rest, wait or chat after the ceremony.
The main building is located on the site of an existing building, which is scheduled for demolition. Nearby is an existing building that is adapted to new functions: administrative and utility rooms. To accommodate all the necessary premises, when designing the reconstruction of the abandoned building, a new floor with an area of 200 square meters was partially added and changed windows and facades. In front of the main building with a hall there is a pedestrian area (only technical vehicles can move), which starts at the entrance to the cemetery. From the square there is a main entrance to the hall on the main facade and there is also an exit from the opposite facade to the ramp leading to the park. A green square with benches and a gazebo has been designed on the site of a round pedestrian carriageway in the far part of the site. This creates a small ceremonial complex.
The ceremonial hall has the opportunity to be transformed to increase the area, due to the sliding partition between it and the entrance hall.
Regarding the design and materials of the new building:
Foundations – according to geological surveys, pre-concrete foundations. Concrete load-bearing columns, monolithic coating on metal beams, dome of metal / wooden structures with a fence of aquapanel (Light Gauge Steel Framing), insulation, waterproofing and wood paneling on the outside (ventilated facade). Enclosing walls: bricks and glass facade systems. Internal partitions: bricks / gypsum plasterboards.
